Federal Prison Facilities

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) runs its institutions at five security levels, from minimum-security camps to high-security penitentiaries, plus administrative facilities such as detention and medical centers. We list 98 of them below, across 37 states and territories. Choose a facility to see how family and friends can stay in touch with someone held there, including how texting works through ContactMeAsap and a link to the facility’s official page on bop.gov for its address, phone number and visiting rules.

ContactMeAsap is pay-as-you-go: you add funds when you choose, and your balance is yours until you use it. Searching for your inmate is free and needs no account.

How federal facilities are classified

The BOP groups its institutions by security level and mission. In short, as the Bureau describes them:

  • Minimum security: federal prison camps (FPCs). Dormitory housing, a relatively low staff-to-inmate ratio, and limited or no perimeter fencing; work- and program-oriented. 6 listed.
  • Low and medium security: federal correctional institutions (FCIs). Low-security FCIs have double-fenced perimeters and mostly dormitory or cubicle housing; medium-security FCIs have strengthened perimeters and mostly cell-type housing. 59 listed.
  • High security: U.S. penitentiaries (USPs). Highly secured perimeters, cell housing, the highest staff-to-inmate ratio, and close control of inmate movement. 15 listed, including the administrative-maximum USP Florence ADMAX.
  • Administrative facilities. Institutions with special missions: detention centers (FDC, MDC, MCC) for pretrial offenders, medical centers (FMC, MCFP), and the federal transfer center (FTC). 18 listed.

Some sites are federal correctional complexes (FCCs): several institutions in close proximity. The BOP lists each unit on its own page; where that applies we cover the units together and link to the BOP’s complex page. These summaries follow the BOP’s own description in About Our Facilities. Facility details on these pages were last reviewed in October 2026.
